THE STORY

Rooted in Rhythm & Longing

The soundtrack to Tara Craig’s childhood was a masterclass in contrast: Miles Davis spinning on her father's turntable, and Joni Mitchell echoing from her mother's upright piano. That early exposure to deep, organic grooves and master-level songwriting left a permanent mark. By the age of thirteen, Tara was already writing her own material, spending hours in her Salt Lake City bedroom recording piano tracks onto old cassettes, overdubbing harmonies, and passing out the tapes in the hallways of her high school.

Shortly after heading to college in Southern California, Tara picked up the acoustic guitar, formed her first band, and began tracking demos in a makeshift studio inside her dorm bathroom. It was the spark of a lifelong obsession with independent production and sonic experimentation.

From L.A. Rooms to Austin Lights

Stepping into the solo spotlight in 2002, Tara became a staple of the competitive Los Angeles songwriter scene, sharing bills with acclaimed contemporaries like Tyrone Wells, Terra Naomi, and Tristan Prettyman. But it was a 2007 move to the live music capital of Austin, Texas, that catalyzed her presence as a powerhouse performer.

In Austin, her intimate songwriting and commanding voice quickly stood out. By 2010, her dedicated fanbase rallied to nominate and vote her as Austin’s "Best Female Musician" at the Roary Awards, taking home the coveted Golden Armadillo against a field of formidable regional talent. That same year, she released her independent debut album, As The Leaves Were Changing, an 11-song collection of folk-pop-rock that showcased her revealing intimacy and insightful lyricism.

Following the debut, Tara spent years touring the Southwest alongside national acts like Alpha Rev, as well as local heavyweights like Gina Chavez and The Belle Sounds. Her 2012 EP, Steadied, marked a pivotal sonic shift—plugging in electric guitars and leaning into architectural drumming and nimble bass lines, proving her voice could effortlessly command a heavy, full-band pocket from a gentle purr to a resonant roar.

The Pacific Northwest and The Present Pocket

Today, Tara Craig operates out of the moody, inspiring landscape of Friday Harbor, Washington, where she lives with her wife, dog, and cat. Her craft has only deepened with time and geography. Her milestone 2023 self-titled sophomore album, Tara Craig, earned widespread critical praise for its emotional vulnerability, rich indie-folk arrangements, and sharp, self-produced artistry.

Now fronting a high-chemistry live lineup featuring veteran rhythm section Daniel DeShon (bass) and Scott Sluis (drums), Tara has built a steady presence in the Pacific Northwest, marked by a string of sold-out shows in dedicated listening rooms.
